My Daily PreK Schedule

Notice that my schedule is mostly consistent from day to day.  Preschool age children do very well with routine and repetition.  The activities I have outlined do not need to be completed in one sitting.  They can be done throughout the day.  Adjust the schedule to what works best for you and your kids. I choose to do the below "school" routine just after breakfast.  I try to keep our schedule light and flexible. Preschool activities should NOT be rigid and strict. The attention span is very short at this age. Keep things short and simple.  Keep in mind that this age needs to play and explore and be free to enjoy their surroundings. That is how preschoolers learn the most! :)

NOTE: The only thing I have purchased to facilitate any academic study for my preschooler is a basic workbook. Below is a link to my favorite workbooks because they are age appropriate and diverse in learning styles.

MONDAY:
     1) Say a prayer together.
     2) Sing a song and read a picture book (10 mins). This is for my toddler. After we are done with the picture books, I let my toddler play by herself in her room while I continue the lesson with my preschooler. Sometimes she chooses to stay and observe the rest of the lesson.  She learns quite a bit from watching her older sister do "school."
     3) Board Activities (5 mins): I use our chalkboard easel to review the letter of the week and it's sound.  We go over how to spell our names, and where we live.
     4) We review/recite an Article of Faith (one per month).  You can choose to have your child recite something else (like a nursery rhyme).  I find it beneficial to exercise memorization skills at this age.  Even if it is only a sentence or two.
     5) Workbook (10 mins): I have a Spectrum Preschool Workbook. I usually have my child complete 2-3 pages per sitting. The concepts are very easy, but I think it is valuable to teach children how to sit and complete an assignment in a quiet setting.
     6) Study the weekly theme by reading short educational books from the library or researching online (10 mins).
     7) Give a hug and supportive words for completing "school."

TUESDAY:
     1) Say a prayer together.
     2) Sing a song and read a picture book (10 mins).
     3) Board Activities (5 mins): Review the letter of the week and it's sound.  Go over how to spell our names, and where we live.
     4) We review/recite an Article of Faith (one per month).
     5) Field trip (1-2 hours). This can be something like visiting a museum, exploring nature at a local park, touring a farm, or going to a theme park. This is one of my favorite sites for Field Trip Ideas in Southern California.
     6) Starfall.com games (20 mins).
     7) Give a hug and supportive words for completing "school."

WEDNESDAY:
     1) Say a prayer together.
     2) Sing a song and read a picture book (10 mins).
     3) Board Activities (5 mins): Review the letter of the week and it's sound.  Go over how to spell our names, and where we live.
     4) We review/recite an Article of Faith (one per month). Practice writing by tracing the AOF.
     5) Workbook (10 mins)

     6) Nature or Outdoor exploration (45 mins-1.5 hrs)
     7) Study the weekly theme by reading short educational books from the library or researching online (10 mins).
     8) Give a hug and supportive words for completing "school."

ONCE A MONTH ON A SATURDAY - We do a daddy-led science experiment as a family.  This is my husband's opportunity to plan something and engage the kids in a fun and educational activity.  Dad loves to be part of our homeschool schedule.

SUNDAY:
- Church/Sunday School

*I definitely do NOT follow this schedule perfectly every week. I just have it as a guide for when I need some direction. I mostly let my daughter's interests guide me. I try to take my cues from her to  maximize her learning potential.
